What’s even worse than losing your home to a civil war is the loss of certain freedoms, especially as a refugee in another country. This is the story of more than 6,000 citizens of the Central African Republic (CAR) living in displacement camps in Cameroon.
They’ve complained of the deprivation of access to basic services for years, and are now witnessing relief in the form of a biometrics-based identity system implemented by the Cameroonian government.
The digital IDs allow CAR refugees better access to education, jobs, health care and the freedom of movement.
The government also assures the refugees that systems are in place to protect their personal data.
